(#8) A Special Note of Appreciation

Dear SLP Friend,

Today’s Therapy Matters is a little different.  We’ll get back to therapy next week, but first, I’d like to share with you that…

I just finished my last BER seminar and I’m headed home on the plane writing to you.  After ten years, I’ve submitted my resignation to the Bureau of Education & Research.  For no other reason than, it’s time.

At the risk of verging on maudlin, my heart swells with pride to be a speech-language pathologist.  I love this most fascinating field, and you, my fellow SLPs, for what you do, and who you are.  You are the most amazingly bright, creative, absolutely fun, caring, and giving individuals on the planet.  Truly.  I hope you realize this.

I’ve had the honor and privilege of meeting and speaking with so many of you.  You are extraordinary men and women.

Most importantly, I want to thank you for attending my seminars.  

Thinking Back…

Now, lest you think doing seminars and on being the road for weeks at a time is somehow glamorous, I recall…

• The time we had a massive fire-drill in San Jose, CA and 80 people filed out the fire-escape that clung to the outside of the older hotel.

• The time the corner of the ceiling fell-in in Baltimore and water gushed down on the food and product tables. We had to finish our seminar scrunched in a sleeping room.

• The time I fell off the stage and broke my ankle in Austin.

• The time I up-chucked and wretched in Reno for all to hear—because I forgot to turn off my microphone. (I still feel really bad about that.)

• The time I painfully (and very obviously) passed gallstones in Syracuse.

• The time we had to cancel New Brunswick, NJ and head to the ER because of pneumonia.

• The time I had laryngitis so bad in Irvine and my good friend Mary Jutila took over and gave the seminar. (Now THAT’s a friend—thanks again, Mary.)

• The time we worked through lunch and left at 1:00 in Wichita, KS to avoid a fast-approaching blizzard. Everyone barely made it outa there.

• The time we had over 200 drenched SLPs in Tulsa due to a major rain down pour. The hotel let us use hairdryers—in the back of the ballroom.

• The time I flew overnight to Honolulu, got to the airport at 6:30 a.m. and spoke at 8:30. (Okay…it WAS Hawaii—I recovered!)

Oh, and did I mention, I went through the big “M” on the road for four years?!! 

I sound like a real sicky!  It has been 25 total speaking-years and, thankfully, I have been well for most of them. 

There have been so many good times; you all made me laugh.  And I wish I could remember the hundreds of great therapy ideas you shared—because there were many and they were terrific!  I’ve loved talking with you and brainstorming analysis and therapy strategies.  I've learned so much from you through the years.

I’ve been constantly surprised at the unique and challenging characteristics of all the cases you work with.  I’ve learned that every person we work with is indeed distinctive and exceptional.  With that said, you’ve kept me on my toes with your questions. 

I also remember the joy of praying with a few of you after our seminar.  Some of you even sent heart-felt cards of appreciation.  You have no idea how much they, and you, mean to me.

Thank you for all the good things you do with your speech and language kids and adults.  They are indeed fortunate to have you.
